When I Grow Up

I can NOT do it, there are not enough pages in the internet to fill up the utter and total disdain I have for what is happening in DC, Wall street, Main Street, My Street. I don’t bang, I rock the dope blogs. So here is something fun to take you back kinda…

PCD (PussyCat Dolls) you know that song they have out. Look I listen to a lot of random music (not always the best or even really music), this explains my ownership of On the Six! Anywho, I thought this would be a great blog.

So I am sure you have heard the chorus:

When I grow up / I wanna be famous/ I wanna be a star /I wanna be in movies
When I grow up/ I wanna see the world/Drive nice cars/I wanna have Groupies
When I grow up/Be on TV/People know me/Be on magazines

When I grow up/Fresh and clean/Number one chick when I step out on the scene

The chorus got me reflecting back to when I was a kid and what I wanted to be when I grew up.
When I was in elementary school I wanted to be a lawyer when I grew up. Then when I was in Jr. High/High School I refined that dream to a corporate lawyer. Then when I was a junior in college I killed that dream when realized that I was done with school. The idea of another three years of law school...well lets say I didn't want to practice law that bad.

I found a new love working in sports and up until two months after graduation I was tracking pretty well into sports management. I had interned with the Houston Rockets (during the glory years) and been offered an internship in Long Island with the Women's Sports Foundation. Well, I didn't take that internship. I was NOT at all prepared to leave Texas and well I had a bf at the time to make staying even easier. You know sometimes I want to slap the younger me, but everything happens for a reason.

So when I graduated with a BA in English, which I got because many lawyers told me it was a good undergrad degree for law school, my dreams of tortes, coach brief cases, and cute legal hair buns was long gone. The realization of my dream of impacting how women were regarded and treated in sports never materialized because of my fear of change. I managed to land on my feet in IT, after a year and a half of being under employed, working as a coordinator for a home builder.

Still young but definitely changed. I think that experience is what taught me to one embrace change and two do not be scared of success, be ready. When I applied for that internship it was at the urging of one of my professors. I didn't think I was good enough to get the internship, so when I did well lets just say I was NOT prepared or ready for the kind of change that CHANGES your whole life. I sometimes do wonder just how different my life would have been had I gone down that path, but it was not the road for me.

When I really started working in IT I decided I wanted to be a CEO of a small tech firm or a CTO of company when I grew up. I’m still tracking to that goal (MBA willing); however truth be told I’d really like to be Martha Stewart when I grow up. *lol* Actually, to be honest I’m a Toys R Us kid!

So what did/do you want to be when/if YOU grow up?

Be EZ,
OG

Do I really have to grow up??

Like you, I also wanted to be a lawyer. Like you, I decided not to follow that path while a junior in college! I didn't think I was smart enough! Now that I'm older and have met many attorneys, I know differently! :)

I'm now a teacher. Some parts I love, some I hate!

Hey OG, like you i had early dreams of being a lawyer, even revisited once in college. But, whew the time you have to invest! Not that I am shirking away from it, but it's not my passion. Now, when I grew up, I want to own a real estate consulting group. Kinda of off the wall outta no where, huh? Me and a friend cooked up a great business plan. But, ultimatley, when I grew up i just want to be happy!!!

I wanted to be either an attorney or actor, instead I work with non-profits. I still dream of theatre but more wanting to be a performance artist mixing media. Of course at my age with 2 kids and a mortgage, not sure that will happen, but I won't rule it out.

Then again, I am not really a grown up, I am just pretending =)

3rd grade i wanted to be a model.
I kept that dream all through junior high, and then in high school, i wanted to be either an actress or pediatrician or anchorwoman (this was around the time that Jane Kennedy was known as the first black newsperson).
I still wanted to be an actress but my parents wouldn't let me attend Julliard, and plus my boyfriend would be too far away. (smh, i with you on wanting to slap my youngself).
So instead i attended a local Univ, and majored in Broadcast Journalism...newsanchor it is...with minor in Theatre...or acting. I later take a job at CNN...then leave to work for more money, and a different career. I chose IT, a growing profession and one i have been involved in now for nearly 2 decades. Now, i want to be a full-time writer...you know when i grow up.

I wanted to be a cop...Can you beleive that? This was my little boy dream...but by the time I got to college, I wanted to be a journalist..That's what my BA is in
-Journalism..Wanted to write for Rolling Stone (VIBE didn't exist at
the time) and then write the great American Novel (I still do..) However, I wound up in Education,(Development & Alumni Relations) because I had mouths to feed and well, This University pays pretty well...but I just might chuck it all one day and go write that novel..And be like Tyler Perry, having movies made and Executive Producing a TV series on HBO. I dream big, don't I?

I'm a junior in college yet I still have no idea what I wanna be when I grow up. Really I don't wanna grow up at all. In the words of Kanye...the concept of school seems so secure
Well that is the question that is keeping me up at night! All my life I wanted to be an attorney, but thats not it. Now I am in this confuse state and scared of not knowing the outcome. Why can't I just stay in that state of mind that I had in college? Where I had all the benefits of adult life, but left the monetary issues to my parents.

English to IT? that's a helluva transition. But, you're right about seizing opportunity and refusing to allow fear to sideline you. Good post.

My dream job was to be a buyer for a department store preferably. I've worked retail gigs off and on for about 10 years. I was close to my dream when I became a manager for a very popular and well known drug store though. But before that happened, I was in the international financial industry. I no longer work as a manager for the store but it was as close to my dream job as I could get.....it seemed like being a buyer was more about who you knew or how lucky you could get (based on demand/need) versus your sense of style or passion. Anyhow, the demanding hours and needs of being a manager had a big negative impact on my personal and home life since I WAS ALWAYS AT THE STORE MOST EVENINGS, WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS. I went back into the financial industry and concluded that the only way I would manage again, the business would be my own. As for buying, I'm not sure if it's worth the attempt anymore considering alot of retailers aren't making the money now adays and going out of businsss.
